Community of practise and connectivism

The community of practise is a social learning theory. Wenger founded the theory of situated learning and a community of practise.  A community of practise is a group of professionals who share their ideas and advice to help with their own practise.  According to cognitive anthropologists Lave and Wenger, a group of people who share a craft and/or a profession; Wenger 2011 add to the explanation of  ‘a community of practice is a group of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do, and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.’For example there are community of practise with counsellors for them to discuss and share their ideas with their peers.  A community of practise can be a blogging group, football fan group, or like me I belong to a community of practise with my church, as we have a range of online resources we use to communicate, as many people in the church live in The Americas and here in the UK. Wikipedia could be likened to a community of practise.

Wenger (2011) says that we are connected through network and communities. ‘The network aspect refers to the set of relationships, personal interactions, and connections among participants, viewed as a set of nodes and links, with its affordances for information flows and helpful linkages. The community aspect refers to the development of a shared identity around a topic that represents a collective intention—however tacit and distributed—to steward a domain of knowledge and to sustain learning about it.’

As I would like to become a teacher a community of practise would be beneficial for my progression in my career. The teachers who have been working for years can give the newer teachers advice and support.

We created an online mind map about our ideas for our online course. our task was to find an online community of practise for our chosen topic, mine was http://spanish.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=spanish&cdn=education&tm=86&f=21&su=p284.13.342.ip_&tt=2&bt=1&bts=1&zu=http%3A//www.mylanguageexchange.com/ this was a website where you can find Spanish speakers to correspond with.
